Literacy skills include the ability to read (or decode), reading comprehension, spelling and written expression.
Literacy skills are essential for everyone as they form some of the foundation for life-long learning. They also encompass enjoyment and being able to access texts in all places of a person’s environment. Literacy can be supported well before starting school by encouraging the development of pre-literacy skills like rhyming and understanding about syllables.
People with literacy difficulties may also be at-risk for learning and employment difficulties. Click here if you have any questions about how your child might be developing their literacy skills.
